Former Hacker: How to Hacker-Proof your PC
Phishing scams. Keyloggers. Trojans. Viruses. They’re a part of the online world. But with these tips from a former hacker, you can keep the creeps away from your private info. Here are five great secrets to keep your PC safe.
(1) Use Gmail. Darned good at filtering spam, including those phoney phishing emails.
(2) Choose non-dictionary passwords. You can make up great passwords this way: the first two letters of a web site, plus a short “key” made up of a few letters, plus a number. So for Hotmail your password might be hogra43; for Paypal it would be pagra43; for ebay it would be ebgra43. All you have to remember is gra43.
(3) Encrypt traffic on your wireless router. The feature is built in, go enable it.
(4) If you’re on a tight budget for security software, use AVG free anti-virus and Malwarebytes.org free malware scanner/remover.
(5) Wave goodbye to Internet Explorer. Use Firefox or Chrome. They’re not bulletproof, but they’re much less targeted by hackers than IE. If you must use IE, upgrade to the latest version and keep it updated.
