Ambergris

November 03, 2010 By: MediumWeb Category: Odd Words

ambergris is one of the world’s most expensive substances used in perfumes. Ambergris is a solid, waxy, flammable substance of a dull gray or blackish color. It sells for about $10 US per gram, and its aroma is characterized as sweet and earthy. In the middle ages ambergris was used to cure headaches and colds. It is considered by many to be an aphrodisiac. Today it is used in some of the world’s most expensive perfumes. But the most peculiar thing of all about ambergris is where it comes from: whale vomit.
